SEVILLE
Seville is the artistic, cultural, and financial capital of the autonomous community of Andalusia and of the province of Seville. The city is located on the plain of the Guadalquivir river, which crosses the city from North to South. In the past the port of Seville played an important role in the commerce between Spain and the Americas, and it remains today one of the most active river ports of the Iberian peninsula.

According to legend, Seville was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. The city was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbya under the Moors. Seville is one of the largest historical centres in Europe and it is universally famous for all its important monuments and fascinating history. While the Sevillians are known for their wit and sparkle, the city itself is striking for its vitality.

Type of public: Young people, families with children, seniors, and tourists passionate about Spanish history, art, architecture and culture.

Courses:  A variety of language courses:  from standard Spanish to specialized courses.  A great location for courses for seniors and group programmes.

TOURIST SEASON
The high season is in April, May, September and October, and it includes Semana Santa and Feria de abril (April Festival). Meanwhile, the mid season is in March and June. Visits are generally recommended in November since prices are not too high and the weather is mild, thus perfect for long walks around the city.

WHY SEVILLE AND WHEN

If you want to learn Spanish in the folkloric heart of Spain, then Seville is the city for you. Sumptuous cuisine, a vibrant tapas culture, ubiquitous terraces, a lively nightlife, the most authentic flamenco performances in Spain, amazing festivals like the Feria de Sevilla and much, much more. Seville is without a doubt an ideal location to combine a Spanish course with holidays. Attending lessons for a couple of hours per day and having the rest of the day off to enjoy the many cultural events of the town and its surrounding area or just relaxing on the beach.

It is difficult to say what would be the best time to take a language course in Seville: during the summer season there are many international students and younger people, which of course entails a very nice atmosphere. During springtime and autumn the city is quieter and temperatures lower (than during the very hot summer months) which generally is experienced as more pleasant and therefore probably a better option for senior course participants.

Things to do in Seville

Seville & Culture
There are so many attractions in Seville that the city deserves at least three days to do it justice. If you have more time available then you will not be disappointed.

Quite worthwhile visiting are:
spaans_in_spanjeSeville Cathedral- Seville's immense cathedral is one of the biggest in the world with only St Peter's in Rome and St Paul's in London being larger. It was built on the site of Muslim Seville's main Mosque between 1401 and 1507. One highlight of the cathedral's lavish interior is Christopher Columbus' supposed tomb inside the south door. It is also home to a priceless art collection including famous works by Goya, Murillo and Zurbarán.
spaans_in_spanjeLa Giralda- The tower which adjoins the Cathedral is called La Giralda. It was the Mosque's minaret and dates from the 12th century.
spaans_in_spanjeReal Alcazar of Seville-This was a fortress from the Muslim-era (dates from AD 913) which served as a hideout of Muslim and Christian royalty for many centuries.
spaans_in_spanjePlaza de España-This is probably Spain's most spectacular Plaza de España which was the centrepiece of the 1929 Spanish-Americas Fair. It contains fountains and mini-canals and is surrounded by a display of tile work representing all the provinces of Spain.
spaans_in_spanjePlaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza – Seville’s Bullfight arena-It is well worth a visit to Seville's bullring which is one of the oldest (1758) and most famous in Spain.

spaans_in_spanjeMuseo de Bellas Artes-Seville's most impressive art collection is housed in a former convent where notable masterpieces by artists of the Seville School (Murillo, Vales Leal and Zurbaran) are well represented.
spaans_in_spanjeTorre del Oro (Paseo Cristobal Colon) Standing on the river, this 13th century Moorish watchtower is now an interesting maritime museum.

Seville & Entertainment

After all efforts one needs to find diversion:
spaans_in_spanjeGo out — The nightlife of Seville is fantastic: no other European city has so many bars per inhabitant than Seville. In summer go to Isla Cartuja and find out why the Spanish night does not stop before 7AM. There you can find plenty of open-air discos. Other nightlife spots include Calle Betis in Triana, La Alamede de Hércules, and Plaza Alfalfa.
spaans_in_spanjeWatch a flamenco show- Flamenco is very popular at the moment in Spain and is not just for tourists. The "Museo del Baile Flamenco" is a museum dedicated to the art and offers a wealth of knowledge, as well as performances at discounted price for museum visitors
spaans_in_spanjeWatch a football match- Sevilla has two football teams, Sevilla FC and Real Betis. At the Sevilla FC stadium next to Plaza Nervion you can enjoy these teams’ games.

Seville & Festivities

Andalusia celebrates its festivals with passion. Seville, as the region's capital, hosts some of the most important events. When the orange trees begin to blossom, Seville decks itself out for its famous Semana Santa (Easter Week) and Feria de Abril (April Fair).

The city's most famous celebration, Semana Santa was begun in the 14th century. In the 17th century it assumed the traits which it maintains today, coinciding with the golden age of Sevillian religious images. Semana Santa in Seville spans the 7 days of Easter, with the staging of daily processions, as well as the 40 days of Lent, necessary for the preparations. The celebration lasts from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday and includes the participation of 57 brotherhoods.

The other big celebration, the Feria de Abril (April Fair), was created in the mid-19th century as an agricultural and cattle fair. Slowly it turned into a fair for the celebration of the Andalusian countryside within the city. For several months Sevillians work to assemble an artificial city of canvass booths, lights and small lanterns. Then, during the celebration, the city's men flock to the event dressed in short jackets, boots and chaps, while the women wear colorful dresses with ruffles.

The biggest celebration of the Guadalquivir, Seville’s river, is the Velá (night) of Santa Ana, held in the sailor's neighbourhood of Triana. It takes place on the 24th, 25th and 26th of July, coinciding with the celebrations of Saint James and Santa Ana (the area's patron saint).

Seville & Surroundings

Despite the contagious charm that inevitably makes you want to stay forever, it is a great idea to take advantage of Sevilla's central location. Whether you want to lay claim to a spot of sandy white beach along the Costa de la Luz's unspoiled coastline or explore the rich cultural history found in Itálica, Granada, or Córdoba, you will find that Sevilla serves as a convenient base for a variety of short trips.

Trips in the surroundings of Seville
spaans_in_spanjeItálica-Surpassed only by Alexandria and Rome, Itálica was the third largest city of the expansive Roman world and the very first Roman settlement in Spain.
spaans_in_spanjeCosta de la Luz-The Atlantic stretch of Spain's southern coastline is appropriately called the Costa de la Luz, or Coast of Light. While Spain's Mediterranean Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) is notoriously touristy and dotted with ritzy resorts, its Atlantic shores, which span from the southern tip of Spain up to the Portuguese border, feature unspoiled stretches of natural dunes and sandy white beaches.
spaans_in_spanjeCórdoba-You cannot possibly leave Southern Spain without seeing Córdoba's breathtaking Mosque-Cathedral, the structure most symbolic of Spain's diverse cultural history.
spaans_in_spanjeGranada- Put aside at least a few hours to hike up to the hills overlooking Granada and lose yourself in the world famous Alhambra and Generalife.

Seville: there is something for everyone!
Seville: all this and much more!
